Anniversary City Day is Celebrated with Country’s Top Leadership and Foreign Guests

  • On September 8, 2018, Vinnytsia celebrated a special birthday - our city is 655 years old, since the first recorded mention of the city goes back to 1363. The community also celebrates the 380th anniversary of the actual existence of Magdeburg Law in the city and the 25th anniversary of Vinnytsia emblem update. Moreover, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the partnership between sister cities of Vinnytsia and Kielce (Poland).

Many guests came to the city on this occasion. Despite the rainy weather, Vinnytsia citizens gathered in the downtown to celebrate their joint anniversary. The country leaders – the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and the Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman, people's deputies - together with Vinnytsia community celebrated the City Day. Many foreign friends and partners of the city joined the celebrations.

Сongratulating Vinnytsia citizens, the President said: "Vinnytsia is able not only to celebrate. In 2014, when we faced the Russian aggression, Vinnytsia was the first one to send volunteers to a front line. The Headquarters of the Air Forces afforded protection of the peaceful sky of Ukraine from the first day of the war! Vinnytsia and Vinnytsia region can work - Vinnytsia Transparent offices are still the most effective and the best ones. Vinnytsia and Vinnytsia region can remember the historical traditions: 100 years ago, Vinnytsia was the capital of the Ukrainian People's Republic, where Simon Petliura thought about ensuring Ukrainian statehood. That is why today, just like every year, when we celebrate the City Day, I am with you."

Petro Poroshenko shared with Vinnytsia citizens that September 8 was a special date for his family - he and his wife, Maryna Poroshenko, married 34 years ago.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman congratulated his fellow citizens, and the birthday of Vinnytsia is always a special and close to his heart celebrations.

"Dear and very close to my heart Vinnytsia citizens and all our friends who came to our glorious Vinnytsia today! In fact, our city is unsurpassed, but everything happened thanks to you. We have overcome not the easiest way, there are many trying times ahead, but your higher demands to authorities and yourself give a great result. I am sometimes asked what the success of Vinnytsia is! The fundamental beginning of our community success was that the authorities began to respect Vinnytsia people. The success starts with the respect to each of you and problems of everyone, in the integration of our efforts - we can do our work qualitatively. I am glad today that thousands of people are outdoors, smiling at one another. I am deeply convinced that currently, under the direction of the mayor Serhii Morhunov, you write the latest history of the beautiful, glorious Vinnytsia, and we will not be in trouble with any weather. Happy holiday, my birth city Vinnytsia!", Volodymyr Groysman said.

Mayor of Vinnytsia Serhii Morhunov noted that Vinnytsia has a rich history and long tradition of self-government, and at the same time – there are many plans ahead so that the city continues to be a leader among Ukrainian cities: "Currently we know exactly what we need to do keeping Vinnytsia on a leading position in many indicators. By today, our city is really a leader city, because world known investors come to us to build factories. We build new kindergartens, schools, and stadiums. We develop transport and infrastructure; we create new parks and squares. Everything is your merit, dear Vinnytsia! At the same time, for the last four years, we could not move as quickly and efficiently as possible without a decentralization reform. I want to thank both the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the Prime Minister Volodymyr Groisman, and people's deputies for the full support of local self-government and its reforms."

There are a number of locations on the City Day this year that tell Vinnytsia citizens about the history of the city - from ancient times to the modern history of the city. The symbols of local self-government will be shown for the first time on one of them, which have been given to the city together with Magdeburg Law. It is Hetman regalia of the mayor: the collar is a heraldic breastplate and a key from the city that embodies the historical heritage and color of Vinnytsia.
